Arriving by Ferry from Guadeloupe or Martinique: Your Complete Guide
Every week, travelers from Guadeloupe and Martinique cross to Dominica by ferry for long weekends, nature escapes, and extended stays. If you're one of them, this guide covers everything you need to know about arriving at the Roseau Ferry Terminal and getting on the road quickly.
The ferry crossing
L'Express des Îles operates regular crossings between Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe), Fort-de-France (Martinique), and Roseau. The journey takes roughly 2 hours from Guadeloupe and 1.5 hours from Martinique, arriving directly into the heart of Roseau.
What happens when you arrive
The Roseau Ferry Terminal sits right on the capital's waterfront. After clearing immigration and customs — usually quick — you'll exit onto the Bayfront. This is where having your rental arranged in advance pays off: we meet you at the terminal with your vehicle ready, paperwork prepared, so you're driving within minutes of stepping off the boat.
Your Dominica driving permit — handled
Visitors need a Dominica Visitor Driving Permit (around EC$30). You don't need to visit any government office — we arrange it for you on arrival. Bring your home driver's license and a passport; we handle the rest.
Tips for French Caribbean visitors
- Drive on the left. Unlike Guadeloupe and Martinique, Dominica drives on the left side. Take a few calm minutes near the terminal to adjust.
- Currency: Our prices display in XCD, EUR, or USD — pay in whichever is convenient.
- Language:Several of our team members speak French. N'hésitez pas à nous écrire en français sur WhatsApp.
- Return crossing: We accept vehicle drop-off at the ferry terminal at any hour, so you never have to rush your last day.
Why book before you sail
Dominica's peak season (December to May) sees high demand, and ferry-day walk-ups often find limited availability. Booking ahead guarantees your vehicle is waiting — and with no deposit required, reserving costs you nothing upfront.
