Driving in Dominica: The Complete Visitor's Guide
First time driving in Dominica? Here's everything you need to know — from permits and road rules to fuel stops and mountain driving — written by a local team that drives these roads every day.
The visitor driving permit
All visitors need a Dominica Visitor Driving Permit, costing approximately EC$30. The good news: when you rent with us, we arrange the permit for you on arrival. Bring your home country driver's license and your passport — that's it.
Drive on the left
Dominica drives on the left side of the road, like the UK. If you're arriving from Guadeloupe, Martinique, the US, or mainland Europe, give yourself a few unhurried minutes to adjust. All our vehicles are automatic, which makes the transition much easier.
Understanding the roads
Main coastal roads are paved and well-kept. Interior and mountain roads are narrower and winding — beautiful, but they demand patience. Three local customs worth knowing:
- Horn taps are friendly.A short beep before a blind corner says "I'm coming" — use it on mountain roads.
- Give way going uphillon narrow stretches when there's a wider passing spot behind you.
- Watch for pedestrians and dogs in villages — roads double as sidewalks in places.
Speed limits
- Urban areas: 30 mph (48 km/h)
- Highways and rural roads: 40–50 mph (64–80 km/h)
- School zones: 20 mph (32 km/h)
Fuel
Gas stations are available in Roseau, Portsmouth, Marigot, and Castle Bruce, accepting cash and cards. Fill up before heading to remote areas — there are no stations deep in the interior.
Rain and the roads
Dominica is lush for a reason. Showers pass quickly, but roads can be slick immediately after rain, and mountain routes may carry loose debris. Slow down, give yourself extra braking distance, and enjoy the rainbow that usually follows.
